Brief History of Shin Nong "The Divine Farmer"
Dr.
Yoo’s Alternative Medicine
& Wellness Center was named
in honor of the legendary Emperor
of China, Shin Nong. Also
known as the Yan Emperor or
the Emperor of the five grains,
he is believed to have introduced
the traditional Chinese medicine
and the techniques of acupuncture
to help eliminate pain and cure
ailments. According to the legend, Emperor
Shin Nong was an early tribal
leader. He lived about 5000
years ago and is known in Chinese
history as “The Divine
Farmer” who taught ancient
China the practices of agriculture.
Shin Nong is respected as the
Father of Chinese medicine.
In order to determine the nature
of different medicinal herbs,
Shin Nong tasted various kinds
of plants to test and analyze
their individual characteristics and effects. According
to the ancient texts, he tasted
over hundred herbs including seventy
toxic substances in a single
day. Now, these herbs are used to help remove
pains and treat illnesses. Shin Nong
is assumed to be the author
of “The Divine Husbandman's
Materia Medica”, which
is the earliest extant Chinese
Medicine Book. This text includes
365 medicinal herbs that are derived from minerals,
plants, and animals. Today, many diseases and ailments can be treated and/or even cured due to Shin Nong's significant contribution to Chinese medicine.
